On Wednesday, shortly after noon, a BMW 130i Challenge race car could be seen on the track of the Brno Circuit, fitted with tyres supplied by the company DUNLOP, of England, for the tests before the upcoming season. In future, DUNLOP could replace the current supplier, the company MATADOR, of Slovakia.
The test drives were conducted by experienced driver Michal Matějovský, who had participated in six races with the BMW 1, always running at the top of the field. Tyres of both manufacturers were tested, under identical conditions that guaranteed the comparability of results. The tyres were of the same dimensions: MATADOR 18x640x235, and DUNLOP 18x640x225. The tests were carried out shortly after noon, at an ambient temperature of 11oC to 14oC. The temperature of the track was from 7oC to 8oC. Unfortunately, because of the press of time, the engineers were not able to adjust the car's wheel alignment to comply fully with the Dunlop company's requirements. For that reason, the wear of the Dunlop tyres was more intense at the outer side of the tyre tread.
Now, the test data will be evaluated both by the manufacturer and by the BMW 1 Challenge directorate, and the decision will be taken soon to determine the make of tyres for the upcoming season of the BMW 1 Challenge series. However, if we compare the fastest times that Michal Matějovský clocked with the respective tyres (2:24.17 with the Matador tyres, 2:22.11 with the Dunlop tyres), the superiority of the Dunlop tyres is evident.
