Matėjovský's debut race with BMW |
- 14. 5. 2006, Most-The 2006 Race Car Weekend, which was held at the Autodrom Most circuit from 12 to 14 May 2006, included not only the main races of the Championship of the Czech Republic, but also a very interesting race of the newly formed BMW 1 Challenge cup (www.bmw1challenge.com). And, it was Michal Matėjovský who stepped in the contests of this cup series right in the town of Most; he was the only driver of the INTERNET EXPRES Prima Team to be involved. The good-looking rear-drive vehicle fitted with a three-litre six-cylinder engine was a great challenge to Michal, offering him the first racing experience with the rear-drive type of car at all. In Friday's introductory free practice, Michal clocked the sixth fastest time. After the first qualifying session on Saturday, he was sixth again, but his lap time improved by three seconds. Then, the first race came, which was held after the rain, with numerous areas of the track still covered with water. Michal was struggling fearlessly. He fought his way ahead from the sixth spot of the starting grid, and even started attacking the second position! But the water on the track combined with the rear drive and powerful engine caused his car to go into rotational skid. So, Michal started chasing after his rivals; in the end, he finished in fourth, just one spot behind a podium place. In the second qualifying session on Sunday, he was seventh and, having great ambitions, he started contesting the race on the dry track. He undertook numerous duels, offering a thrilling spectacle. He was moving ahead. As opposed to his rivals, he did not make mistakes and was clocking stable lap times to finish the fifteen-lap race in second place! |
