Bad luck at Pau
The second race of the Seat Leon Eurocup series' weekend racing event at Pau took place in fine, sunny weather. Michal Matějovský started the 19-lap race thirteenth on the grid. Unfortunately, this race, too, was affected by several collisions that occurred shortly after the start. Michal managed to avoid the first crash only to get involved in the next one. His Seat was hit from behind, and this impact pushed it forward, right into a car that was spinning ahead of Michal. The subsequent crash could not be avoided. Despite that, Michal did not give up his fight for a fine placing. After several laps, however, it was evident that the car's radiator had been damaged, which caused the engine temperature to go up. So, Michal had to stop in the pits and retire from the race.
The fact that the track at Pau is very treacherous has been documented by the statistics: only 16 of the 25 drivers on the starting grid have finished the race. 'My yesterday's fears came true. A race of this type is to a considerable extent determined by the results of the qualifying and by the particular coincidence. If the driver has not achieved a top ten time, he is in a difficult position in both races, because overtaking manoeuvres are very complicated at this type of track. This is, however, a valuable experience for the future,' Michal Matějovský summed up the Sunday race at Pau.
