Battle for a top position lost in the gravel of the escape area
In the last race of this season, on Sunday, 5 October, at the Monza circuit, Michal started 19th on the grid but, unfortunately, did not see the chequered flag. That is, the car was running well after the mechanics had repaired the engine, and Michal was moving up the order. But then, after one of the battles, Michal's car went off the road and got trapped in the gravel of the escape area. 'I lost the optimum track in one of the battles, and the car went off the road, into the gravel. I was not able to release it. It is a pity, because the car was perfect today,' Michal Matějovský commented on the situation shortly after the race.
By participating in this brand-new, difficult racing series, Matějovský gained great wealth of experience. The young Czech driver finished 16th overall, among more than 30 drivers. 'My objectives before the season were higher, but if I look back at the entire debut series of the SEAT León Eurocup, I have to take into account the fact that most drivers had had a lot of practice at all the circuits involved, as opposed to me. Before this season, I did not have any experience with a half of the tracks, which, naturally, was not easy to deal with. Furthermore, most drivers were familiar with the car, as they had contested some of the Seat Leon Supercopa series for several years. I do not want to make excuses for some of the results. I am just giving a realistic assessment of the situation. This adds to the reasons why I highly value the fact that, in the face of great competition, I was able to draw level with the top ten drivers several times, and I even claimed a top-three place in one of the races. I am very glad that we decided to embark upon this very difficult way. I would like to thank to all those who made this possible for me. This season has been a great experience for me. In the winter period, we will concentrate our efforts on the training at circuits in Spain and I look forward to the opening race of the 2009 Seat Leon Eurocup series,' Michal Matějovský summed up his achievements with a Seat car in one of Europe's first-class contests.
